Background, particular interests and hobbies

After a long career in the Royal Navy, including commanding several ships and appointments to the highest level in Whitehall, John Kerr retired as a Commander-in-Chief and Member of the Admiralty Board.

Subsequently he has been involved in a variety of activities, including the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (Vice-Chairman), the Museums and Galleries Commission, the RNLI and with universities where he has been a Member of the governing bodies of both Lancaster and Manchester.

He is currently the Pro-Chancellor of the University of Manchester. He has known the Lake District since childhood and includes fell walking, sailing, music and matters historical among his interests.
