The Lake District Sustainable Development Fund (SDF) has handed out over £12,000 this month to three pioneering eco projects
Villagers in Staveley, near Kendal, have come up with Smarter Travel Choices and, with the help of partner organisations, want to cut car journeys through lift sharing, cycling, walking and public transport. SDF co-ordinator Clive Wickham explained over £5,000 had been given to “an impressive community action plan” involving a three month pilot running from January to April 2009.
A unique enviro film festival will bring the big screen to Broughton in Furness on 14 and 15 November 2009 to highlight the effects of climate change. SDF has donated £4,000 to help stage what Clive describes as an innovative gathering. He said: “As well as showing short films from around the world, a specially commissioned documentary about a day in the life of the local community’s apple press - also supported by SDF - will be screened. The festival is a great idea and something to look forward to next year.”
A three-day low carbon boating event on Coniston during 2009’s Bank Holiday weekend between 2 and 4 May has been awarded £2,800 towards costs. The Lakes Green Boat Gathering will see Coniston’s eco-friendly boat operators combine with private owners to showcase sustainable power vessels.
The SDF will be making an announcement early in the New Year about pay-outs for greening up village halls. The fund has helped over 400 community and environmental schemes with grants ranging from £28,000 to £100.
We are particularly keen to support projects which have a climate change or renewable energy focus. For further information contact Clive on 01539 792661, email clive.wickham@lake-district.gov.uk
What is sustainable development?
Sustainable development is based on the idea that the quality of people's lives and the state of our communities, is affected by economic, social and environmental factors. The links between them influences our quality of life now and in the future.
What is the Lake District Sustainable Development Fund?
With help from Defra we have a grant scheme to support projects that combine economic, social and environmental benefits and have positive impact on future generations.
Projects that help support the Vision for the National Park, consider new ways of living and working that look after the Lake District National Park or projects that increase understanding and enjoyment of the Lake District’s special qualities are particularly suited to funding.
We are keen to support new and exciting ideas from individuals, businesses and community groups, in the public, private or voluntary sector. We're now accepting applications for 2008 - 2009.
How to apply
Please read our advice on our How to apply page where you can also download an application form.
How does the SDF link with climate change?
This year, in line with the Vision for the National Park and our Climate Change Action Plan, we want to encourage projects that recognise and address the effects of global warming and increasing energy consumption.
Climate change is directly linked to the increase of carbon in the atmosphere. Our actions in everyday life, from using electric and gas at home, to driving to work all have a direct impact. However we can all take steps to reduce our carbon footprint - check out our Toolkit for Sustainable Living. As an organisation, we aim to lessen our carbon emission by up to 100 per cent by 2012.
As an individual, what can I do?
The basic principles are reduce, re-use and recycle. You can also check out our Toolkit for Sustainable Living.
