Tutored Modules: Higher Education
Background
Our modules aim to raise awareness about topics either in or relating to the National Park. They are designed to link closely to the National Curriculum, Key Stages and syllabuses. The modules enable students to gain practical experience of topics in the National Park and the fieldwork is enquiry-based investigation. The information gathered by students provides a sound basis for follow-up work to be undertaken back at school. We endeavour to accommodate all abilities. Please phone to discuss your requirements.
Resources
Pre-visit Teacher's Notes will be sent with the confirmation of your booking. They will provide further details of the programme and ideas for preparatory and follow up work to the module. We will provide additional resources and worksheets for the fieldwork during the module.
Duration
Most modules are a full day (6 hours) or half day (2 hours 30 mins) in length. Full day modules usually start at 10.00 and half-day modules at 10.00 or 13.30. Introductory Talks and Role Plays last for 1 hour. A Rather Special Park lasts for 1and a half hours. We can be flexible on start times, however timing is critical! If the group is late we will try to fulfil the programme, but we do reserve the right to curtail the module or to cancel due to other commitments.
Staffing
Our tutors are experienced teaching staff with specialist knowledge and fieldwork expertise. In addition to their general knowledge and teaching skills they all have a first class understanding of the Lake District environment and the National Park. They all hold first aid certificates and are trained in risk assessment and group management.
Supervision
Accompanying staff must remain with their groups at all times to assist where necessary and to be responsible for the conduct and behaviour of their students. Group Leaders should ensure that sufficient staff accompany each group to meet their LEA guidelines or other Codes of Practice.
Clothing and equipment
Groups must be fully prepared for fieldwork in the unpredictable Lake District weather. This means provision of strong footwear and waterproofs. Tutors retain the right to change or cancel the programme if the students are not suitably prepared for the weather on the day. At certain times of year and on specific modules tutors will insist on walking boots. We are able to provide details of local hire services. Please bring your own clipboards and writing materials.
Transport
Groups will need their own transport to get them to the meeting point and, where necessary, to the fieldwork sites.
Liaison prior to your visit
Please contact your tutor before your visit to discuss the needs of your group. Your tutor will then be able to adjust the structure and content of the module to meet your requirements.
Group preparation is vital to successful fieldwork and this prior contact is essential to the delivery of the module. The pre-visit Teacher's Notes will help you with this preparation.
