Understanding the National Park

Education service

Fellwalking in the Lake District National Park

The ultimate outdoor classroom

“Every young person should experience the world beyond the classroom as an essential part of learning and personal development, whatever their age, ability or circumstances.”

- Learning Outside the Classroom Manifesto DFES 2006

The Lake District National Park is a spectacular landscape in which to discover, learn and develop skills. The Education Service is here to work with schools, youth groups, individual students, teachers and group leaders. All groups are unique and we're happy to discuss a bespoke programme tailored to meet your needs.

Tutored modules

Studying ecology at Tongue Gill

There are tutored modules for all students from Primary to Higher Education. Full and half day modules take place in locations throughout the National Park, including the National Park Visitor Centre at Brockhole, overlooking Windermere.

Our modules raise awareness about topics in or relating to the National Park. They link closely or support the delivery of key objectives in the National Curriculum, QCA Schemes of Work, and exam board specifications.

Students gain field work experience through enquiry based investigation. The information they gather provides a basis for follow-up work back at school or college. We try to meet the needs of all groups either through the formal curriculum or informal vocational work.

“I’m sure more learning took place in one day than can ever be done in a classroom.”

Holmes Chapel Primary School - June 2006

“Fantastic – cutting edge fieldwork that has huge benefits for students and should directly improve their performance in their synoptic paper. Where else could you get quality provision like this?
