Understanding the National Park

Ring Cairns to Reservoirs

Fellwalking in the Lake District National Park

We've teamed up with the Duddon Valley Local History Group to run an archaeological project to learn more about what life in the Duddon valley used to be like. 'Ring cairns to Reservoirs: investigating the archaeology of the Duddon Valley’ began in April 2006.

With financial support from the Heritage Lottery Fund, it encourages local people to take part in archaeological survey, excavation and interpretation. Archaeologists from the National Park Authority and National Trust provide training and assistance.

The project will run until the end of 2008 and involves an archaeological survey, documentary investigation and excavation of a Bronze Age ring cairn at Seathwaite Tarn. We will also produce leaflets and a booklet on the archaeology of the Duddon Valley.
