Looking After the National Park

Definitive Map Review

Building fences in the Lake District National Park

The current definitive map of footpaths, bridleways and byways for the area was published in 1976.

We are producing a new definitive map by a process of continuous review. This involves a thorough survey using Geographical Positioning System and then resolving any anomalies and errors. Applications to correct errors on the definitive map such as missing paths are dealt with under the specific legislation.

Requests to alter paths by diversions are assessed using principles agreed by Committee in 1997.
