Adventures for children

Canoeing in the Lake District National Park

Make 2008 your year of adventure

The Lake District is jam-packed with amazing adventures for tots to teenagers.

Awesome days out

We've loads of events for families and children from Victorious Vikings to Have a Go at Geocaching. 8 - 11 year olds can learn how to search for treasure on our Children's Pathfinder days. And there's always something going on during the Year of Adventure.

Car-free fun

Our Give The Driver A Break leaflets explain how you can ditch the everyday car for a real journey of discovery involving buses, trains and even boats! Or take a look at the Great Walking and Cycling made easy routes which use public transport so you don't have to retrace your steps.

Little legs and buggies

Our Miles Without Stiles section has over 20 laidback routes. Some highlights include:

Walking in Brockhole woods with buggies copyright Ben Barden
  • 1 - Friar's Crag, Keswick, a circular route alongside Derwentwater with amazing views of the central mountains, lake shoreline and woods.
  • 18 - Tarn Hows a circular walk round a beautiful tarn with views of mountains beyond and lots of woods to play in.

There are other Short Routes and the popular riverside walk between Skelwith Bridge and Elterwater in the Langdale valley. Our Lake District Visitor Centre at Brockhole has an adventure playground, a beach and jetty and trails around the gardens - check out Outdoor fun for more details.

Heroic happenings

Beatrix Potter loved the Lake District - Squirrel Nutkin sailed on Derwentwater and Johnny Townmouse lived in Hawkeshead. The Greendale of Postman Pat is here and if you time it right, you might be able to meet Thomas the Tank Engine at Ravenglass and Eskdale railway (opens in new window).

Brockhole jetty

And for Swallows and Amazons fans, the list goes on forever! Hike up Kanchenjunga himself - the Old Man of Coniston, check out Wild Cat Island, also known as Peel Island on Coniston by taking a cruise or hiring a boat from Coniston Boating Centre. You might also want to check out the Windermere islands.

Ghosts and ghouls

Atmospheric walks in wintry light can give you a thrill. What about risking a walk around haunted Claife Heights? Find out more in Windermere folklore and myths.
