Miles Without Stiles
The following routes have been suggested as suitable for wheelchair users. Most are very limited in terms of distance and often follow minor roads. Parking is often limited.
River Brathay. Grid Ref 365035
Park your car by the river opposite Old Brathay Hall. Follow minor road alongside the river and Brathay Church. The broadleaved woodland is especially beautiful in autumn.
Borwick Field. Grid Ref 443970
Leave the car at the junction east of Borwick Field and follow the quiet, gated roads to either Ings or Staveley. Extensive views but rather steep in sections.
Ouse Bridge. Grid Ref 200321
There is a short path giving access to the shore of Bassenthwaite Lake. It has a rolled surface with loose chippings.
Bassenthwaite West Shore. Grid Ref 222272
Access to this path is possible from the layby on the A66 at Blackstock Point. The path leads north and provides an opportunity to enjoy the peace and quiet of the lake, recently designated a National Nature Reserve.
Castlerigg Stone Circle. Grid Ref 294237
Leave car in layby and access the monument through the gate and up the grass slope. May require a strong pusher.
Manesty Park. Grid Ref 252189
This is an access route to get views north across Derwentwater towards Skiddaw. Leave car in roadside layby, ensuring that gate is kept well clear for private access, and follow the tarmac track through the woods to The Warren, turn sharp right (signed footpath to Lodore) and follow a good surfaced path to the lake.
Great Wood Car Park, Derwentwater. Grid Ref 272213
Follow tarmaced road to the car park exit. Cross Borrowdale road and follow the good level path to the Lake. Superb views. The return route is rather steep.
Loughrigg Tarn. Grid Ref 342048
There is limited parking space but the route along the track at the back of the tarn provides superb views in a very peaceful setting.
