Grizedale Forest occupies the fellside between Coniston Water and Esthwaite Water. The visitor centre lies on the Hawkshead to Satterthwaite road. There are two specially designed ‘easy going trails’ suitable for wheelchair users. These are the Ridding Wood Trail and the Millwood Trail. They feature even surfaces and gentle slopes to enable visitors with mobility difficulties to explore the forest and enjoy the views and the various woodland sculptures for which Grizedale is famous.
These sculptures have been created by artists in residence and their work won the prestigious Prudential Award for the Arts in 1990.Full details of the trails and associated facilities are available from the visitor centre. There is plenty to see and do at Grizedale and it would be worthwhile allocating at least half a day. The exhibition explains the history and wildlife of the working forest. A self-propelled platform for wheelchairs is available on request.
