Miles Without Stiles
This new path allows those with limited mobility to access one of the best views in the Lake District.
There is an unobstructed view looks across Keswick and Derwentwater to the head of Borrowdale from very close to the summit of Latrigg at a height of 368m. The path leaves the Gale Road car parking area and is surfaced for approximately one kilometre to a bench at the final viewpoint.
Distance of route: 1km (0.6 miles)
Gradient: An early section of the path, although well-surfaced, has a gradient of over 1 in 8, so will not be suitable for everyone.
Special features: Viewpoint overlooking Derwentwater and Keswick, fell side
Parking: There is a layby at the top of the Gale Road. From Keswick follow the A591 Carlisle road, turn right a few yards after the roundabout intersection with the A66 and then right again, very sharply. Then follow the signposts to Skiddaw. Beware as the track is rough. As this is a popular starting point, it's best to get there early.
The Latrigg Access for All path is a Bassenthwaite Reflections project (opens in new window), supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund, with work carried out by the Lake District National Park Authority.
