Enjoying The National Park

Our walk grades

Canoeing in the Lake District National Park

One step forward

A walk's grade is based on the height gained, how long the walk is and the steepness and number of gradients. Be careful not to overestimate your fitness or underestimate how changing weather, hot or cold, can have on your ability and stamina.

These boots are made for walking

For your safety - walking boots must have good tread, ankle support and ankle protection. Trainers, walking shoes or walking shoes are not adequate, so choose an easy walk if you don't have walking boots.

Easy

Shorter walks of around 2-3 miles / 3-5 km at a leisurely pace. These are as flat as possible, but paths may be uneven given the nature of the Lake District landscape. These walks do not require you to wear walking boots.

Easy +

Walking boots required. Footpaths may be rough, stony or boggy. Generally this grade involves lower levels, lakeshores and valley bottoms. The pace will be leisurely with little ascent.

Moderate

Walking boots required. Footpaths may be rough, stony or boggy. A reasonable level of fitness on uneven and rising/falling levels is required.

Hard

Walking boots required. A long, energetic walk on higher footpaths that may be rough, stony and boggy. Some ascents or descents may be quite steep. A good level of fitness in these conditions is required.

Strenuous

Walking boots required. Longer, often full day walks, with steep ascents and descents that may be rough, stony or boggy. The walk may be on the high peaks and could be up to 10 miles / 16 long, requiring an appropriate good level of fitness and stamina.

Visually impaired suitability

In general guided Easy and Easy + walks will be suitable for people with visual impairment. Please ensure you are accompanied by a sighted guide during the event. Guide dogs welcome.
