Focus on a ranger
Sara Spicer, Lake District National Park Southern Countryside Team Leader

What's your background?
I come from a farming background, and wanted to keep links with that, but I didn’t want to be directly involved with farming. I initially did voluntary work while I was at college, and was a ranger with a local authority before I became a ranger and then team leader with the Lake District National Park Authority.
What’s special about the Lake District National Park?
It’s a fantastic landscape and this changes with the weather. Some days it can be crisp and clear, others it can be moody and mysterious. You never tire of the landscape or area due to these changes.
What are the best - and worst - parts of the job?
I enjoy the variety and getting involved with the various issues affecting the ranger team. I also take the opportunity to get out on site with the rangers to resolve issues or look at practical projects.
What is the most magical time of day?
Early morning when the mist is rising from the valley bottoms.
What advice would you give to someone who would like to become a ranger?
Be prepared to do some voluntary work to gain experience, and don’t give up.
