Looking After the National Park

Bluetongue disease

Building fences in the Lake District National Park

Current situation

Declaration on behalf of the Secretary of State in force from 1 September 2008

The Protection Zone will be extended to cover Northumberland and Cumbria, following the completion of the vaccination programme. This means all of England is in the Protection Zone. Find out more, including a map of the zone, in Defra's Declaration of Blue Tongue Protection Zone (opens Document Library)

Further details

Cumbria and the Lake District have the same status as the rest of England. Access to the countryside is not affected. Designation as a Bluetongue Protection Zone is a precaution that only affects the movement and sale of farm animals.
