Acting sustainably as an individual is relatively straight forward, but working together as a community is much more powerful in achieving sustainability on this planet.

This could be as a family living sustainably together at home, following some of the tips and advice in this toolkit. It could be acting together with your colleagues in your office environment at work. Or it could be pulling together with your local neighbourhood community through communal venues or meetings.

Sustainable Living in your Neighbourhood

Cumbria County Council in partnership with Eden LA21 are currently piloting a ‘Sustainable Communities’ initiative in five communities within Cumbria. Each community have identified local environmental issues, are tackling them and share their experiences and best practices in a newsletter. Email office@edenla21.org.uk to find how your community could get involved.

Eden LA21 are spearheading the ‘Sustainable Community Buildings Project’ to improve the sustainability of village halls, community centres and schools. They are arranging a ‘Cumbria Green Build Tour’ in summer 2006 the public, communities and businesses to see first hand some of the installations. Email office@edenla21.org.uk to organise joining the tour.

Cumbria Community Foundation provide a simple way for local community groups in Cumbria to get grants for projects by acting as a broker between donors and grant seekers, and give advice - www.cumbriafoundation.org

Global Action Plan run the ‘EcoTeams’ project, a unique programme to help a group of 6-8 households to take action to reduce their environmental impact from energy and water use, household waste, transport and consumer behaviour.
