Surface: Semi-rough - good quality standard footpath, attention given to remove worst rocks and tree roots. Still difficult for self-propeller.

Gradient: Steep: Sections of ground where self-propellers will have great difficulty and care is needed.

Parking: Limited parking in small layby on east side of Cat Bells.

Special features: View point

This small layby and stretch of bridleway leads to the Walpole Memorial offering spectacular views of Skiddaw, Derwent Water and the east shore of the lake including imposing Walla Crag and the smaller Falcon Crag. From Friars Crag the drive south on the Borrowdale Road and back north around the lake will bring you to this viewpoint whilst providing the option of continuing south to the Bowderstone.
