No room at the inn?

Whilst Mary and Joseph couldn’t find anywhere to stay in Bethlehem, many people in the Lake District find it hard to buy their own home.

We help by attempting to make sure that new buildings or conversions are of a type needed by people who live and work locally.

We do this through:

  • our planning policies
  • consulting local communities about their needs
  • Asking our Compliance staff to work closely with local housing groups to find out what's needed
  • Being involved in Cumbria's 'Fit For Purpose' Housing Strategy

Home is where the heart is

Affordable housing is a nationwide problem but there are specific issues that affect the Lake District. Low wage levels, a high proportion of second homes, shortage of land available for development, high price of land and the need for quality design and appropriate building materials all have an effect on the price of local housing.

Find out more on our affordable housing web page (opens in new window).
